As I watched Zappa try to think, I was reminded of the United Negro College Fund slogan: "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste." I was Godzilla; Zappa was Bambi. It was no contest. Now that the seven dirty words are out of the way (and I am DAMN proud of America for letting me post them without reprisal from the Moonie newspaper you used to write for) I want to respond to the "Zappa on Censorship" video from Crossfire, 1986.
Your mock concern for the youth of today is the last refuge of classic fascism. Example: the Hilter Youth. In one campaign to recruit children, the Nazis warned of how the degeneration of youth would lead to the end of civilization. Sound familiar, John?
As for your assertion that you were Godzilla and Zappa was Bambi: I think you hit it right on the head when you wrote "As I watched Zappa try to THINK,..." Yes, John he was thinking. And twenty years down the road you and Tipper Gore's dire warnings of 'the end is near' because of dirty words in music and sex on t.v. still sound as alarmist and laughable as they did then.

This is amazing. Do a google search for this video. There are several blogs discussing it. John Lofton (or someone working in his guise) has left the SAME comment (above) on each thread! Talk about insecure. John, you may have had the best of intentions back then, but you know the saying. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. You lost this debate.

I am a 50 year old musician with two kids, daughter 25 with a collage education and son 15 who is autistic. I have worked with many musicians over the years and many politicians and other folk. I just for the first time saw the crossfire with Frank Zappa and I must say that I have never heard such crap as I did from JOHN LOFTON. This man is a fucking IDIOT. I know this was taped in 86 and was a while back and I wonder just what this MORON John Lofton is thinking now.

The really funny thing is that Zappa's music is still relevant in todays society, yet John Lofton is as irrelevant as...well....whitewall tires and running boards. I watched this video with great interest and to be honest Lofton reminded me of a spaniel puppy barking and growling at a very tolerant Doberman. Frank Zappa has always been his own person, and he never allowed others to place limits on him, and in this video he is protecting us from the zealots who would impose limits on us. Thank you Frank, may you rest in peace. And Lofton? You can kiss my A**!!!!
