Bring them to our place (Bloomington Public Library in Bloomington, IL), for we welcome them with open arms. PSP's, DS's, Advance SP's whatever works bring it in. Some folks just don't get it, and I really feel for them.
My son does his vocabulary and spelling words on his DS. Yeah, it is a novelty and paper and pen might work just as well, but that is where he is at. Just let them be and meet them halfway.
I don't know the location of this one as I just found the pics on flickr. As for others, in most cases I have a professional relationship with the library so I have to be careful with that concept.
Why say "punish the guilty or at least the clueless"? That is an insensitive remark. We should try to work on them to convince them of our viewpoint. Punishment is not the way to go. Besides, we are ignorant of any local incidents that may have inspired these measures.
So this time I agree it's "not fair" to make an over-arching statement against a particular library activity. At one of the branches where I teach, the juv computers are always in use and sometimes games, sometimes school work but I guess my theory is that I'd rather have the kids inside at a safe library then out on the street as this branch is in a really rough part of town.
I agree with Connie that this infers other electronic devices such as PDAs ought be left at home or confiscated and if they aren't, then what is really being said is "we don't want kids here." That's a real bummer to say the least (and in polite company).
